About Manatí
Founded 29 June 1738 on the north coast, named after the manatee. 39,492 people at the 2020 census, twenty-third most populous municipality.
It is Las Atenas de Puerto Rico and Ciudad Metropolitana. Pineapple made it — Manatí was the island's pineapple centre for generations — with sugar cane, shoes, woodwork and now pharmaceuticals alongside.
Antonio Vélez Alvarado, called the father of the Puerto Rican flag, was from Manatí. So were three ballplayers most of the island can name without thinking: Carlos Beltrán, Iván Rodríguez and José Valentín.
Mar Chiquita, the horseshoe cove cut into the limestone, is the beach people photograph. The Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria church dates to the seventeenth century and its festival runs in February. Hurricane María destroyed roughly 1,500 homes here.
