About Maunabo
Founded 9 March 1799 by Luis de Santiago, in the Maunabo valley on the southeast coast. 10,589 people at the 2020 census.
It is La Ciudad Tranquila, and the other two names are about crab: Los Jueyeros and Los Come Jueyes. The Festi-Carnaval Jueyero runs the first week of September and is exactly what it sounds like.
The Punta Tuna lighthouse, built by Spain in 1892, marks the corner of the island. The Central Columbia sugar mill worked from 1901 to 1929 and its ruins are still there. The beaches are Los Bohíos, Los Pinos and Playa Punta Tuna.
The endangered guajón — the cave frog — lives in this municipality. The local paper, La Esquina, has come out since 1975 and distributes 40,000 free copies across the region. The ballplayer Heliot Ramos is from Maunabo.
