About Naguabo
Founded 15 July 1821 by Luis de Gaztambide, Juan Viera, Antonio Viera and Juan Méndez, having first been settled in 1794. 23,386 people at the 2020 census, on the east coast at the edge of El Yunque.
It is Cuna de Grandes Artistas and Los Enchumbaos — the soaked ones, for how much rain falls here.
Cayo Santiago, off the shore, holds over a thousand rhesus monkeys introduced in 1938 for scientific research. Everyone calls it Monkey Island. It is one of the longest-running primate research colonies in the world.
The town is the birthplace of the pastelillo de chapín — trunkfish in fried dough — and of Inés Mendoza, Carmen Delia Dipini and Filiberto Ojeda Ríos. There is a monument to Ramón Rivero, "Diplo." Fiestas Patronales de Nuestra Virgen del Rosario run in October.
