About Orocovis
Founded 10 November 1825 by Juan Rivera de Santiago, in the Cordillera Central. 21,434 people at the 2020 census. It was called Barros until 1928, when it was renamed for a Taíno cacique.
It sits at the island's geographic centre, which makes it Corazón de Puerto Rico — the heart of Puerto Rico. About ninety minutes from San Juan, and it feels much further.
Santero carving — the wooden saints — was dying out until Celestino Avilés Meléndez revived it here. By 2019 over three hundred santeros were working across the island. The Encuentro Nacional de Santeros happens in Orocovis every December.
The Ruta de la Longaniza is the other pilgrimage, for artisan sausage. Toro Negro forest holds El Guineo, the highest lake in Puerto Rico, and the Salto de Doña Juana falls. Bobby Valentín and Manny Manuel are both from here.
