About Patillas
Founded 31 October 1811 by Adelina Cintrón, who owned La Finca Patillas and donated almost eight acres to found the town. 15,985 people at the 2020 census. The name comes from an indigenous word for a native watermelon that grew here.
It is La Esmeralda del Sur and Los Leones. The municipality runs from the Caribbean shore up into the Carite mountains, which is why it has both beaches and waterfalls — Charco Azul and Los Tres Chorros are the ones people swim in. Lago de Patillas was built in 1914.
Sugar cane and plantains work the land. Fiestas Patronales de San Benito Abad run in August, the Emerald of the South Carnival in May.
Emilio "Millito" Navarro was born here in 1905 — the first Puerto Rican to play in the Negro leagues. A fire in 1841 killed a great many people in the town.
