About Peñuelas
Founded 15 August 1793 by Diego de Alvarado, on land settled from 1754, on the south coast between Guayanilla and Ponce. 20,399 people at the 2020 census.
It is La Capital del Güiro — the notched gourd scraped with a pua, without which plena does not exist. The National Güiro Festival runs in May. The other name is El Valle de los Flamboyanes, for the poinciana trees that go scarlet in summer.
Heavy industry arrived with the CORCO petrochemical complex and left its mark. "La Negra Cocola," a Baldwin steam locomotive, sits in the town square. Charco La Soplaera is where people swim.
On 29 October 1950 the first incident of the Nationalist Party revolt happened in Peñuelas — the day before Jayuya rose. The pitcher Luis "Tite" Arroyo is from here.
