About Río Grande
Founded 16 July 1840 by Desiderio and Quilimaco Escobar, on the northeast coast. 47,060 people at the 2020 census.
A large part of El Yunque National Forest — the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System — lies within the municipality, including El Toro, at 3,474 feet the highest point in eastern Puerto Rico. Hence La Ciudad de El Yunque.
The municipality has 48 bridges and 27 beaches. Coco Beach and the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve host the PGA Tour's Puerto Rico Open every March. Fiestas Patronales de Nuestra Señora del Carmen run in July.
After Hurricane María, 230 Puerto Rican parrots held in captivity here survived the storm — a significant share of a species that came within a few dozen birds of extinction.
