About Sabana Grande

A southwestern town in the Lajas valley, settled from 1776 and organised as a municipality in the early nineteenth century. 22,729 people at the 2020 census.

It is La Ciudad de los Petateros, for the petate palm mats woven here, and El Pueblo de los Prodigios — the town of prodigies. That second name does a lot of work.

Félix Rigau Carrera, the first Puerto Rican pilot and the first to fly air mail on the island, was from Sabana Grande. So was John Ruiz, the first Hispanic heavyweight boxing world champion. So was the MLB All-Star José Vidró.

Hacienda San Francisco, a historic sugar mill, is on the National Register. The Sanctuary of the Virgin of the Rosary of the Well draws pilgrims. Susúa State Forest sits above. Fiestas Patronales de San Isidro Labrador run in May.
