About Salinas
A fishing town on the south coast, west of Guayama, organised as a municipality in the nineteenth century. 25,789 people at the 2020 census.
It is El Pueblo del Mojo Isleño and Cuna del Mojito Isleño — the tomato, onion and olive sauce that goes over fried fish was born in these kitchens, and the seafood places along the shore are the reason people drive down. Also Los Marlins and El Pueblo de Abey.
The Albergue Olímpico, Puerto Rico's Olympic training complex, is in Salinas. So is Camp Santiago. The Antigua Central Aguirre sugar mill ran until 1993 and still stands. Fiestas Patronales de Nuestra Señora de la Monserrate run in September.
Zuleyka Rivera, Miss Universe 2006, is from Salinas. On 18 September 2022 Hurricane Fiona dropped thirty inches of rain here.
