About San Lorenzo
An eastern mountain town on the San Lorenzo Batholith, between the Sierra de Luquillo and the Sierra de Cayey. 37,693 people at the 2020 census, twenty-seventh on the island.
It is Pueblo de Los Samaritanos and La Tierra de Leyendas, the land of legends. The Samaritanos baseball team won national titles in 1975, 1997 and from 1999 through 2002.
The Iglesia Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes was built in 1737 and renovated in 1993; its festival runs in September. The Santuario de la Virgen del Carmen sits up at Montaña Santa. The Passion Fruit Festival is in November.
Tobacco, sugar cane, coffee and fruit worked the land; clothing, pharmaceuticals, footwear and paint keep people employed now. The singer Chayanne is from San Lorenzo.
