About Toa Alta
Founded 12 January 1796 on land settled from 1751, on the Río de la Plata in the northern karst. 66,852 people at the 2020 census.
It was once called Granja de los Reyes Católicos — the farm of the Catholic Monarchs — and is now Cuna de Poetas, cradle of poets. Also La Ciudad del Toa and Ciudad del Josco, with a Festival El Josco every October.
The writer Abelardo Díaz Alfaro was born here, as was the cuatro player Tomás "Masso" Rivera and Dayanara Torres, Miss Universe 1993.
In 1797, when the British attacked the island, two sergeants from Toa Alta — José and Francisco Díaz — were among those who helped repel them. The Nuestra Señora de la Concepción y San Fernando church anchors the plaza; its festival runs in May.
