About Trujillo Alto

Founded 8 January 1801 as Municipio La Santa Cruz de Trujillo, after Juan Francisco de Carazo petitioned for recognition in 1798. 67,740 people at the 2020 census, on ground rising from the coastal plain into the hills behind San Juan.

It is Ciudad de los Manantiales, city of springs, El Pueblo de las Ocho Calles for its eight streets, La Ciudad En El Campo, and Los Arrecostaos — the laid-back ones, who also run a marathon named after the nickname every year since 1985.

The Carraízo dam, built in 1953–54, created Loíza Lake and holds Puerto Rico's main water reservoir. The Santa Cruz church in its present form dates from 1933; the Lourdes Grotto was blessed in 1925.

The Olympic hurdles champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn is from here, as are the jockeys Irad and Jose Ortiz. In Hurricane María almost the entire electrical system collapsed.
