About Vega Alta
Founded 22 January 1787 on the north coast. 35,395 people at the 2020 census. Bananas, fruit, grains and sugar cane work the land; Cerro Gordo is the beach.
It is Pueblo de los Ñangotaos and Los Maceteros. The Inmaculada Concepción church was founded in 1813 and its festival runs in December; there is a Kite Festival in July, and the second-largest mosque in Puerto Rico, built in 1992.
The names that travel furthest: Lin-Manuel Miranda's family is from Vega Alta, and his father opened La Placita de Güisín in the town in 2017. Bernie Williams is from here. So are the Molina brothers — three catchers from one family, all World Series winners, which no other town anywhere can claim.
Ladislao Martínez, the first Puerto Rican to play a cuatro solo on the radio, was also from Vega Alta. Hurricane María destroyed 90% of the town's wooden homes.
