About Vega Baja
Officially recognised by Spain on 7 October 1776, on the north-central coast. 54,414 people at the 2020 census, across fourteen barrios running from shore to mountains. There is evidence of indigenous settlement here going back as far as 2580 BCE.
It is Ciudad del Melao Melao, and the Melao Melao Festival runs every October alongside the Fiestas Patronales de Nuestra Virgen del Rosario.
Oranges and sugarcane made it. Central San Vicente, established here in 1873, was the first modern sugarcane refinery in Puerto Rico.
The Tortuguero Lagoon and Puerto Nuevo beach are the natural draws. As for people: Juan González, Iván Rodríguez, the wrestler Damian Priest, and Benito Martínez Ocasio — Bad Bunny — are all from Vega Baja. In 1990 a drug-trafficking case turned up $43 million in cash buried here in plastic barrels.
