About Aguadilla
Founded on 6 July 1775 by Luis de Córdova. 55,101 people at the 2020 census. It has nineteen beaches by the count of the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources — more than anywhere else on the island — which is why it is Jardín del Atlántico, the garden of the Atlantic.
The other names are odder. La Villa del Ojo de Agua, for the spring. And Pueblo de los Tiburones, shark town.
Surfing is the export. Aguadilla hosted the ISA World Surfing Championship in 1988. But the working town runs on pharmaceuticals and electronics — LifeScan, Honeywell, Hewlett Packard Enterprise — and it holds the only ice skating complex on the island, which in this climate is its own kind of statement. The Punta Borinquen lighthouse marks the corner. On 7 November 1944 the island's worst railroad disaster happened here; sixteen people died.
