About Cidra
Founded 1 October 1809 in the central mountains, north of Cayey. 39,970 people at the 2020 census. The name traces to the citron — cidra — once grown here.
The climate gave it La Ciudad de la Eterna Primavera, the city of eternal spring. The other name matters more: El Pueblo de la Paloma Sabanera. The plain pigeon was down to almost nothing, and Cidra is its principal habitat on the island. There is a Paloma Sabanera Festival every December.
Lago de Cidra, built in 1946, supplies water across the region. The Nuestra Señora del Carmen parish anchors the town and its festival runs in July. Coffee and tobacco were the old crops.
In Hurricane María the high barrios saw more than twenty-five landslides per kilometre and roughly 1,500 homes lost their roofs.
