About Moca
Founded 22 June 1772 by Don José de Quiñones, in the northwest. 37,460 people at the 2020 census.
Moca is La Ciudad del Mundillo, and the town is essentially synonymous with the craft — mundillo is Puerto Rican bobbin lace, made on a cylindrical pillow, and Moca is where it is kept alive. There is a museum for it. The Palacete Los Moreau is the other landmark.
Then there is the other thing. On 25 February 1975 the papers reported fifteen cows, three goats, two geese and a pig found dead with puncture wounds. El Vampiro de Moca entered the folklore and never left — which is also why the town answers to Los Vampiros, alongside Los Rebeldes.
The Nuestra Señora de la Monserrate parish was begun in 1841 and its festival runs at the turn of August into September. A 5.8 earthquake was centred here on 16 May 2010.
